How does Hyaluronic Acid work?
Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally occurring hydrating component found in the skin, cartilage and other connective tissues of the body. Also known as a glycosaminoglycan, it is part of the extracellular matrix, alongside proteins such as Collagen and Elastin that provide structural support to the skin.
This hydrophilic molecule acts somewhat like a sponge, capable of retaining up to 1,000 times its weight in water. With a lifespan of around 24 hours, it is constantly renewed. The quality, quantity and concentration of Hyaluronic Acid produced by the body begin to decline from the age of 20. By the age of 50, the epidermis is estimated to contain only 50% of its original reserves, contributing to loss of firmness and the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Synthetic Hyaluronic Acid can be produced through a chemical process. Extracted from rooster combs, it is treated with solvents before being purified. Today, this method is gradually disappearing, as synthetic Hyaluronic Acid is less well assimilated by the skin.
