Hyaluronic Acid: The New Anti-Ageing Ally

Are you dealing with a tired-looking complexion? Want to help prevent the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines? Add Hyaluronic Acid to your skincare routine without delay.

How does Hyaluronic Acid work?

Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally occurring hydrating component found in the skin, cartilage and other connective tissues of the body. Also known as a glycosaminoglycan, it is part of the extracellular matrix, alongside proteins such as Collagen and Elastin that provide structural support to the skin.

This hydrophilic molecule acts somewhat like a sponge, capable of retaining up to 1,000 times its weight in water. With a lifespan of around 24 hours, it is constantly renewed. The quality, quantity and concentration of Hyaluronic Acid produced by the body begin to decline from the age of 20. By the age of 50, the epidermis is estimated to contain only 50% of its original reserves, contributing to loss of firmness and the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Why is Hyaluronic Acid the new anti-ageing ally in skincare?

Hydrating, antioxidant and repairing properties

Discovered in the 1930s, the use of Hyaluronic Acid was developed in the 1970s for ophthalmic procedures. Its healing properties have been studied since the 1980s. Its interesting anti-ageing properties were subsequently identified, thanks to its involvement in collagen synthesis and its ability to retain large quantities of water. Since the early 2000s, it has been used in aesthetic medicine to fill wrinkles.

Very quickly, the success of injections gave rise to a new trend in skincare. This star molecule was incorporated into serums and anti-ageing creams, helping to combat skin ageing without resorting to aesthetic medicine. When applied topically, Hyaluronic Acid is now recognised for its powerful hydrating properties and its ability to naturally boost collagen production.

Hyaluronic Acid is safe when used in hydrating and anti-ageing cosmetic products, as it acts only at the surface of the skin.

Natural active ingredient or synthetic molecule: two different production processes

Derived from biotechnology, so-called natural Hyaluronic Acid is plant-based. It is naturally produced by certain microorganisms through a laboratory-controlled wheat fermentation process. Pure and Natural Hyaluronic Acid is identical to the molecule produced by the body. Solvent-free, it allows optimal absorption.

Synthetic Hyaluronic Acid can be produced through a chemical process. Extracted from rooster combs, it is treated with solvents before being purified. Today, this method is gradually disappearing, as synthetic Hyaluronic Acid is less well assimilated by the skin.
