Because the oceans are the blue lungs of the planet, PATYKA, which became a Mission-Driven Company in 2020, is working alongside Coral Guardian to protect and restore coral reefs threatened by pollution.

Did you know ?

• 25% of marine species and 275 million people depend on corals for their livelihoods (not just for food, but also for employment - fishing or tourism).

• Depending on the area, coral ecosystems supply between 10% and 90% of the world's fish.

• ¼ of the world's coral reefs have already suffered irreversible damage.

• By 2050, almost 90% of all reefs could disappear...

The causes of this damage: global warming, but above all human activities such as fishing (overfishing, fishing with dynamite, cyanide, etc.), pollution (waste, wastewater, oil spills) and coastal development (industrial, residential, tourism, etc.).

The impact of sunscreen on the seabed

Every year, no less than 14,000 tonnes of sun cream end up in the seas and oceans. It is even estimated that 25% of the ingredients in sunscreens applied to the skin are released into the water after 20 minutes (Source: Danovaro study, 2008).

Recent scientific studies have shown that certain chemical UV filters cause coral bleaching and alter their microbiota, leading to their disappearance.

The cosmetics industry therefore has a real role to play in preserving our oceans.

Patyka supports the Deep Core project by Coral Guardian x Coral Soul in Spain

In 2022, PATYKA renews its commitment to Coral Guardian by supporting the installation of a new coral nursery in the Mediterranean. Thanks to the local Coral Soul team, damaged corals are removed and then placed in nurseries designed to save the sickest specimens (nurseries provide a safe environment for corals). They are given all the necessary care, monitoring and maintenance until they recover. Once they are healthy again, they are reintroduced into the natural environment to bring the seabed back to life.

By supporting the transplantation of corals into the wild, the installation of a nursery and the regeneration of coral colonies, PATYKA is helping to restore marine biodiversity and a healthy ecosystem.

En 2023, grâce au soutien financier de PATYKA :

• 845 coraux ont été repeuplés
• 1218 Kg de déchets ont été nettoyés des fonds marins
• 4752 personnes ont été sensibilisées à l’importance des écosystèmes coralliens
• 3 nurseries de coraux ont été installés et maintenues à 30, 34 et 36 mètres de profondeur

Cela représente plus de 2000m² aire marine restaurée, dont 121m² de Zone Spéciale de Conservation.

94,6% des coraux restaurés sont toujours en bonne santé, au bout d'un an après avoir été transplantés (taux de survie);

Ainsi, en soutenant la transplantation de coraux en milieu naturel, l’installation d’une nurserie et la régénération des colonies, PATYKA participe au retour de la biodiversité marine et au rétablissement d’un écosystème sain.
