The eye contour, a delicate area
The skin around the eyes is an extremely sensitive area. The epidermis is four times thinner here than on the rest of the face. It also contains fewer sebaceous glands, collagen fibres and elastin fibres – three essential elements for skin renewal.
Furthermore, lower sebum production makes the hydrolipidic film, the epidermis’ protective barrier, much more vulnerable to external aggressors.
Finally, the eye contour has no hypodermis – the layer of tissue located directly beneath the dermis – making it more difficult for the skin to receive essential nutrients. While particularly delicate, the eye contour is also constantly in motion throughout the day.
Between eyelid movements and thousands of blinks, direct exposure to external aggressors, irritation caused by insufficient tear production and disruption of the skin barrier leading to water evaporation, many factors can weaken this sensitive area. As a result, it becomes drier and more prone to dark circles, wrinkles and dehydration lines.

What causes a dehydrated eye contour?
The skin on our face is made up of 70% water, 25% of which is found in the epidermis, at the skin’s surface. Its circulation ensures optimal hydration throughout the face and facilitates the exchange of essential nutrients between cells. Water is also what gives skin its supple, plump appearance.
When the skin’s balance is disrupted, water evaporates more easily. Very thin areas of the face, such as the eye contour, can gradually become dry and dehydrated due to this lack of water.
The result: the skin creases and fine dehydration lines appear at the corners of the eyes, particularly in the morning upon waking or in the evening after an intense day.
Several factors can cause this dehydration:
-
Lack of sleep: after a short, restless night, the skin does not have enough time to regenerate and recover from the aggressors it has faced throughout the day. Upon waking, features appear more drawn, lines around the eyes look deeper and under-eye bags become more visible.
-
Overly harsh make-up removal and unsuitable skincare: an inappropriate beauty routine inevitably dries out the eye contour. This delicate area requires special attention, gentle cleansing and suitable products.
-
Blue light: we spend more and more time looking at computers, phones and tablets. We blink and squint up to four times more in front of a screen than usual, which over time can exacerbate eye-area dehydration.
-
Environmental conditions: air conditioning, pollution, cold, wind… our skin faces all kinds of daily aggressors, and the skin around the eyes has fewer resources to protect itself. Without suitable skincare, the eye contour can therefore become increasingly dry.
-
Facial expressions: smiles and other expressions of emotion leave their mark on our face. Over time, they can make fine lines more pronounced. The loss of collagen and elastin becomes more noticeable around the eyes, gradually deepening crow’s feet and dehydration lines.
-
Lifestyle: hormonal fluctuations, stress, smoking and exposure to UV rays without sunglasses can affect the beauty of the skin and contribute to premature skin ageing.
