In winter, to face the cold, or in summer, when we are more exposed to the sun, there is only one watchword for maintaining beautiful skin: hydration! Although the epidermis naturally protects itself, it sometimes needs a boost to stay perfectly hydrated.
The skin naturally hydrates itself
To remain supple and soft and to protect itself from external aggressors (pollution, wind, sun, stress, temperature fluctuations, etc.), the skin naturally secretes sebum: this is what is known as the hydrolipidic film. Sometimes, when the epidermis is subjected to harsh conditions, this protective barrier may become somewhat compromised. As a result, the skin is no longer able to maintain its level of hydration. It becomes dry, flaky, itchy and dull.
As if that were not enough, the skin naturally loses water every day. This evaporation process, known as transepidermal water loss, helps stabilize the hydration level of the epidermis at around 13%. Below this percentage, the skin is considered dehydrated.
Simple steps to hydrate your skin from within
Adopted on a daily basis, these few simple tips help naturally hydrate the skin.
Drink enough water
To maintain skin hydration, it is essential to drink plenty of water. Healthcare professionals recommend consuming a minimum of 1.5 L of water per day in order to compensate for the natural water losses of the epidermis. Of course, remember to drink more in the event of physical activity or when temperatures are particularly low or high.
Eat water-rich foods
Some fruits are made up mostly of water. This is the case with melon, watermelon and citrus fruits, as well as vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber and tomatoes... Ideally, eat them at every meal so that you can see their benefits for the skin.
Humidify the air
When cold weather sets in, we tend to spend time in overheated environments. Conversely, when temperatures rise, we often turn the air conditioning up to the maximum. In both cases, these bad habits eventually dry out the skin. To help it stay hydrated, you can use an air humidifier at home or at the office. Ideally, the indoor humidity level should be between 40% and 60%.
